PTCL announces result for Oct to Dec quarter

KARACHI: Net profit of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) stood at Rs1.94 billion during October to December 2010 compared with Rs2.78 billion recorded in the same period last year.

PTCL, the largest broadband service provider, announced its financial results for the second quarter (October to December 2010) of fiscal 2011 on Thursday, according to a notice sent to the Karachi Stock Exchange.

“We remained focused on our strategy of positioning PTCL as a leading integrated telecom company, providing multiple solutions to business and household market segments and extending vital services to other telecom operators in the country,” said PTCL President Walid Irshaid while commenting on the results in a press release.

The company’s revenue fell seven per cent to Rs13.8 billion in the period under review compared with Rs14.95 billion in the same period last year.

Intense competition in the telecom sector continues to impact PTCL’s topline growth, said BMA Capital analyst Sana Bawani in a research note.

Income from non-core operations rose 15 per cent to Rs1.29 billion on the back of higher interest income on loans to a subsidiary and returns from investments in government papers.

Outlook

PTCL recently launched new landline packages aimed at customers with different telephony needs offering on-net minutes bundles and a monthly charge. However, these would be free of any line rent from subscribers, Bawani added.

Additionally, PTCL has completely revamped its broadband entertainment portal ‘PTCL Buzz’ to attract a larger client base. Also, the company has launched data centres in Karachi and Lahore for corporate and small to mid-sized enterprise (SME) customers.

The highlight

One of the major highlights of the first half of the current financial year was the launch of IMEWE submarine cable — a 13,000-kilometre fibre optic submarine cable travelling through three continents to interconnect South Asia to Western Europe, according to the company press release.

IMEWE along with PTCL’s previous two submarine cables namely SMW3 and SMW4 holds the status of a backbone for the country’s telecommunication infrastructure, the release added.

Ufone celebrated its 10th anniversary with great fervor

Ufone celebrated its 10th anniversary on 29thJanuary with great fervor. This day is memorable for all as 10 years ago the launch of Ufone was the dawn of a revolution within the telecom industry. Ufone started out as a service for the masses and it pushed to remove the perception and reality that cellular services were only for the elite in the country. Today cellular services are enjoyed by people from every walk of life which has been made a reality thanks to the promise that Ufone once made to the people of Pakistan and has fulfilled that promise through this journey of 10 years. Over the last decade the telecom industry has seen fierce competition with an exceptional decrease in tariffs, a major focus on value added and customer services in which Ufone has taken the lead.
Ufone has shown vast growth and endurance throughout, even though with the intense competition; the organization has shown great reverence with its increase in revenue and has always remained profitable. In 2009 -2010 Ufone led the market with the highest revenue growth in cellular industry (source PTA).

Over the last few years the world has witnessed one of the worst global recessions during which downsizing was one of the major cost cutting techniques used by organizations, On the other hand Ufone stood out by not following the trend and instead motivated and acknowledged its employees by giving more financial benefits and focused on growth in all business areas with a major focus on corporate social responsibility and has always come out to help the people of Pakistan through testing times.

Mr Abdul Aziz CEO Ufone speaking at this auspicious occasion said: This is indeed an emotional moment for me as 10 years ago I was part of a very small but highly committed and focused group of individuals who helped start Ufone. “We stand tall today in the market because of our incredible service orientation, and a great team spirit that did not fade out due to time; it only grew stronger. From the day that we launched till now, we as an organization value the essence of our corporate mission and vision of Becoming the Best Cellular Option Available for U!”. Ufone has surely come a long way and today is one of the most aggressive and competitive telecom companies in the country. I would like to thank our family of more than 20 million customers our strategic partners and thousands of Ufone employees around the country for helping make Ufone the driving force that it is today. I would like to add, for Ufone “Success is a journey, not a destination!”
